One of the bigger numismatic hits of 2014 has been the New Zealand Mints inaugural release in its new Disney range of coins. Depicting Disney’s most iconic character as seen in his debut movie role, “Steamboat Willie” was an unqualified success with both the silver, and especially the ¼oz gold selling out extremely quickly, the latter in a matter of hours.

Late in 2014 the NZ Mint announced the availability of monster one-kilo versions of the design in both silver, and most unexpectedly, in gold. Struck by the Perth Mint and with a maximum mintage of just 28 pieces, the gold 1kg coin will go down as one of the most exclusive and beautiful Disney collectibles of all time.

We’ve been staggeringly fortunate to get our hands on one for just a few hours thanks to both Minted-UK, and to the sheer generosity of its new, hugely fortunate owner, who has allowed us to photograph it and share what will be a coin virtually nobody would otherwise get a chance to see, and we’d like to thank them both for the opportunity. The coin has been covered at AgAuNEWS before, so just enjoy the images (sorry some aren’t great but the coin and my lighting rig couldn’t be united in time). If you’re lucky enough to be in a position to purchase one, Minted-UK can hook you up with either a gold or silver 1kg version. At 100mm diameter, the silver is even larger than the 75mm gold, which itself dwarf’s the one-ounce silver as you can see below.
