Numiscollect’s beautiful Aztec Calendar Stone coin has a very limited trip to the gilders

REVERSEOBVERSE

The first of their Archaeology and Symbolism series, the 2018 Aztec Calendar Stone 3oz silver coin from Numiscollect was a piece that impressed us last year with its level of detail. Aided by Smartminting, it reached out to a 65 mm diameter. A tiny item compared to the 3.58 metre diameter, 22 tonne original. As we speculated in our look at the original antique-finished coin, if the original were made of gold, it would tip the scales just shy of 200 tonnes.

There are no changes to the original coin for this addition to the range, except for the obvious eschewing of that antique finish for gilding. Both sides get the treatment, and it’s an all over affair – not a highlighting. It was a beautiful coin last year, and it remains so today.

Packaging (box, certificate of authenticity etc.) remains the same we understand, but the mintage this time around is just 99 pieces. Added to the originals 333, it’s still a small amount, although we’d like to know these variants are coming in advance as some collectors get annoyed at the increase. We’ll reach out to see if this years Mandala issue will be getting a similar added variant to the range, or if this is a one-off. Lovely coin.
