2020 proof Britannia range launches with a huge range of sizes and sets from the Royal Mint

Another early in the year release for the Royal mint’s iconic Britannia series of proof coins and it’s as expansive as ever. Ice sculptor James Tottle is having his first crack at designing this series and has done a very nice job of it. A little busy in the background, perhaps, but it strikes all the jingoistic chords that has epitomised the Britannia for decades.

The usual vast selection of size. There are 8 gold coins ranging from 5oz down to 1/40oz. Only the 5oz, 2oz and 1/4oz are on offer individually, with the rest included in one of two sets. A three-coin set (1/2, 1/4, 1/10) for £1700.00 and a six-coin set (1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, 1/20, 1/40) for £3850.00 are the only options for some.

Silver coins come in 1kg, 5oz and 1oz proof finish, or as a 1oz brilliant uncirculated that is vastly cheaper (£55 vs £85). A six-coin set (1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, 1/20, 1/40) remains the only way to pick up the tiddlers, and sells for £215.00. Also joining the range this year is a neat looking set comprised of a pair of 1oz silver coins. One is a proof coin, the other is reverse-frosted, this being the only way to obtain this coin. The mintage of this £170.000 set is just 700 pieces.

A great new addition is the framed with a print offering. Just 25 of the gold coins will be offered in a choice of black or dark-wood frame with a print of Tottle’s original artwork designs. A further 100 of the silver coin will be presented in the same way, but with a different print and a choice of four frame styles. You can see an image at bottom. The price premium is higher as you would expect, but this does seem to be a cool way to obtain this staple of the numismatic calendar.

A single 1/4oz platinum version is also available for £25 less than the equivalent gold. Packaging on all versions is of a good quality – we’d expect nothing less from the Royal Mint. Please double check the mintages before purchasing. We think we’re correct, but the info presented is hardly crystal clear. Available to order now, if you buy after clicking the link below we’ll
get a small commission at no cost to you, and our appreciation.

MINTS DESCRIPTION

The Royal Mint today launches its 2020 Britannia collection. The figure of Britannia first appeared on Roman coins but disappeared with the end of the Roman Empire. Britannia re-emerged in the Elizabethan era but only returned to coins in 1672 during the reign of Charles II. From that time to the present day she has featured on the coins of every British monarch.

This year’s design is both respectful of the past as well as a contemporary interpretation. Britannia stands facing into the wind, a trident planted into the rocks as the waves crashes around her. On her arm she holds a shield featuring the head of a lion.

James Tottle is the designer of the 2020 Britannia collection and is best known for his dramatic ice sculptures; magnificent figures carved from large frozen blocks. In 2018, James went on to win a live ice sculpting competition with a red dragon’s head at Tatry Ice Master.

Born and brought up in South Wales, James Tottle said of his design, “I felt that a strong pose with a striking silhouette of Britannia in the foreground alongside the Union flag in the background would produce a well-balanced image; I also wanted to feature the lion so I worked it onto the shield. The image needed some movement and drama so I used crashing wave and a billowing dress to achieve this.”

Clare Maclennan, Divisional Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said, “The story of Britannia is intimately linked with the story of the nation she represents – Britain. Britannia has appeared on Britain’s coinage for centuries, and this year we are thrilled to introduce a new unique design of the icon that has personified a nation.”
