The New Zealand mints first silver miniature of the year is fan favourite Wonder Woman

With comic book heroes blasting their way to record box-office receipts, it’s fair to say the huge increase in modern commemorative and bullion coins tapping into the genre is heavily linked to that success. The NZ Mint has recently added DC Comics to its range of licenced properties and as you would expect, has primarily limited releases to the new silver foil formats it has heavily invested itself in.

Last year however, the mint added a Superman miniature to its fledgling silver statuette range – a quite outstanding piece by sculptor Alejandro Pereira Ezcurra. This time around, Ezcurra has turned his attention to Wonder Woman. Before the release of the blockbuster movie last year, Wonder Woman would likely not have been considered a priority as a DC character of choice given there are long-running Green Arrow and Flash tv shows in production, but the movie was a huge hit and here we are.

Slightly lighter than Superman at 135 grams, this 90 mm tall figurine is a fine representation of a character that has undergone countless incarnations over the decades. Interestingly, this is the first of the mints miniatures to be cast in sterling 0.925 silver instead of fine (0.999). It comes on a removeable 60mm diameter base, under which is the serial number. Packaging of the Superman figure was excellent and this looks the same, so no concerns on that score. Priced at $550.00 USD, these are items strictly for the hardcore fan, but they’re well rewarded with a first class item. We have no doubt that other characters will follow – how can you have a DC Comics range without Batman? Available today, with several of our sponsors selling them, so give them a shout.
