High times ahead! Numiscollect journey back to the Swingin’ Sixties with their latest cannabis coin

REVERSEOBVERSE

One of the more unusual themes for a series of precious metal commemorative coins, Cannabis is nevertheless a large part of popular culture today, and has been for the last six decades. The modern roots of this growth in popularity is without doubt the 1960’s. A period of social change and turmoil, the whole ‘hippy’ culture and the famed ‘Summer of Love’, brought cannabis closer to the mainstream than it had ever been before.

The psychadelic drug art of this period is reproduced perfectly on the latest in Numiscollects long running Cannabis Sativa coin range. A hand doing the victory sign is laid over a background of cannabis plants. It’s been brightly coloured and covered with words often associated with the counter-culture movement, like Peace, Love and Hope, for example. The design is a neat change from the botany-based designs that have preceded it, although the obverse design remains the same as previous coins – based as it is around the national emblem of Benin.

An ounce of fine silver with a 999 mintage is pretty standard these days, but the Peace & Love coin has a concave relief face to make it stand out from the crowd, much like the previous issue in 2016. Again, this is flat on the obverse face so not a domed strike. Shipping in a box with a Certificate of Authenticity, it should ship in a couple of months time, but be available for pre-order any time now.
