The Ascension of Jesus wraps up Scottsdale Biblical Stories for 2019, its fourth year

REVERSEEDGE

Rounding out its fourth year in an epic ten-year program, Scottsdale Mints Biblical Series debuts the 24th coin in the series and the last of the six to be released in 2018. Based on the work of 19th century French wood engraver, Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré, the reinterpretation of these by sculptor D’Almeida Novissimo has been absolutely first rate. Whatever your beliefs, there’s no question that the Bible is a rich source of stories ripe for artistic appreciation, and the last two millenia of art history has proven highly fruitful.

Dore’s work is quite unique and seems to translate well to the face of a silver coin. For those unfamiliar with the series, each coin is rimless and struck in two ounces of fine 0.999 silver, which is then antique-finished. The variety of coins to date has been very impressive, with 2018 easily maintaining the standard of previous years. There should be another six coins next year, and you can read more about the other issues in our comprehensive visual guide to the series.

This one covers the Ascension of Jesus as laid out in Chapter 1 of the Acts of the Apostles, and depicts Jesus rising to Heaven while the disciples look on. Available to order now.
