A sport gaining popularity around the world, cricket has almost completed its ‘Superbowl’ with the holding of the ICC 2015 Cricket World Cup. Held every four years in different locations, this time around it’s in Australia and New Zealand. There have already been a couple of pretty cool domed coins issued in celebration of the tournament, one from the Royal Australian Mint and one from the New Zealand Post. Both posts have more information on the game and the tournament, so we won’t repeat it here.

While medallions aren’t usually our thing, this one is unusual enough to warrant a mention. Struck in antique silver-plated zinc alloy, the piece is distinguished by having within its circle of metal a piece of one of the actual stumps used for the world cup matches. The wood has been etched on both sides, one with the logo and one with the trophy.

This has got to be something every cricket fan would love to get hold of and the good news is that the zinc alloy has meant the price has been kept low at just $39.90 NZD ($30 USD, £20, €28). A memento of the game rather than a coin collectors target, we’d imagine the 500 will shift quickly. It’s up for pre-order now and ships very shortly.

For those interested in the game, the final happens to be between the two hosts and plays on Sunday 29 March.
