Portugal, as a member of the European Union issues its coins in Euros and what we have here are their issues for 2014 to date. The Portuguese mint is called Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda, or INCM for short. Established in the 13th Century, they’re owned by the Portuguese government and are responsible for all the countrys currency.
Releasing coins in gold and silver, and as both individual pieces and ongoing series, the selection to date from 2014 is pretty eclectic, with the Yokes coin being a particularly interesting piece.
PORTUGUESE ETHNOGRAPHY 02: THE YOKES
‘With the aim of showcasing elements of the traditional culture that makes up our identity, the INCM, in partnership with the National Museum of Ethnology, has created the series of collection coins entitled “Portuguese Ethnography”.
The second coin of this series, designed by sculptor Baiba Sime, features the “Jugos”, also known as “Cangas”, profusely ornate wooden yokes from the Northwest of Portugal, that were attached to the teams of oxen used in farming.’
Issued in gold and in silver, with each available in either a straight wooden box or in a limited-edition acrylic and wooden case for a little extra, it’s an unusual design and a very unusual subject, so maybe has the makings of a Euro sleeper hit.

2014 FIFA WORLD CUP BRASIL
‘In 2014, Brazil hosts the final phase of the 20th Football World Cup, a competition organised by FIFA, gathering 32 nations from the five continents around what is considered as the most popular sport in the world.
To mark this major sports event, INCM is issuing a commemorative collector coin with a face value of 2.50 euros, designed by sculptor Hugo Maciel. This issue is limited to 15,000 copies in proof silver and 5,000 copies in proof gold, presented in a case with a guarantee certificate.’
A nice design, better than many of the other coins released to mark this mammoth sporting event, the obverse has the huge statue of Christ the Redeemer either side of a globe superimposed on a football. The obverse depicts a footballer in action behind goal netting. Both the gold and silver are supplied in a wooden box containing a Certificate of Authenticity, all wrapped up in a coloured shipper. We’ve added the coin to our 2014 World Cup guide.

100TH ANNIVERSARY OF MILITARY AVIATION
‘In this year did 100 years of military aviation in Portugal are commemorated, the event is being marked by the INCM, Which is minting a commemorative coin created by sculptor José Simão.
The design of this coin recalls the history of military aviation, evoking on its obverse the pioneering days of aviation, with a seaplane flying over the ocean and, on its reverse, on F16 fighter over flying country on a mission: two faces, past and present , connected by the course of aircraft.
The issue of the coin, with a face value of € 2:50, is limited to 2500 copies in 925 ‰ silver with a numismatic proof finishing, packaged in a case with a guarantee certificate, and 75,000 in cupronickel with a normal finishing.’
Another clean design, although in our view with a concept better than its execution, this one should be quite popular and joins the ranks of coins celebrating military centenaries, unsurprising given we’re also 100 years from the start of the First World War.

2014 FERNANDO PESSOA
‘Fernando António Nogueira Pessoa (Lisbon, 13th of June 1888 – Lisbon, 30th of November 1935), better known as Fernando Pessoa, is considered to be one of the greatest poets in the Portuguese language. As a poet his production is divided over that of several different heteronyms through which he developed his work.’
Now here’s a design we really like. Strongly evoking the Twenties & Thirties, this celebration of Fernando Pessoa, described as one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century, is a classic looking affair that’s finished in what the mint calls ‘Fleur de Coin (FDC), and one that should strongly appeal to those of a literary leaning. Available only in gold, at 1.56g it remains an eminently affordable piece at € 83.00.

2014 EUROPEAN COMPOSERS: MARCUS PORTUGAL
‘Forming part of the European Series, did Elected European Composers as the theme for 2014, the Portuguese coin pays homage to Marcos Portugal (1762-1830), one of the most prolific Portuguese composers ever.
This coin, created by sculptor Paula Lourenço, shows on its obverse the portrait of Marcos Portugal and on its reverse a lyre surrounded by laurel branches, symbolizing the greatness of his musical works.’
Another coin in the standard 12g silver format used by Portugal, an uninspiring design in our view but we all gave our own tastes, so you may disagree. As others, it comes in a wooden coin with an enclosed COA.
