STAR WARS MOVIE POSTER FOILS
The NZ Mints flagship silver foil format, premium foils are similar in shape and not far short in size to a sheet of A4 paper. This series reproduces the iconic movie posters of all the Star Wars movies, starting with the original trilogy.
Each foil is sealed in a flexible acrylic for protection – necessary due to how astonishing thin these are – and then put into a hard acrylic frame that is an excellent method of display. They sell for $130.00 USD and weigh in at just over a troy ounce. The mint has also started a similar program for the Star Trek movies that might be of interest to sci-fi fans.
DENOMINATION | COMPOSITION | DIMENSIONS | FINISH | MINTAGE | BOX / COA |
$2 NZD | 35.0g of 0.999 silver | 175 x 262 mm | B/UNC, colour | 10,000 | YES / YES |
STAR WARS COMIC COVER FOILS
The latest series of premium foils, this one, showcases some covers from the various issues of the original Star Wars comics. Some of the artwork is now considered pretty iconic, but as a series, it will likely have smaller appeal than the movie poster range.
As before, they come in an excellent hard acrylic frame for ease of display. The NZ Mint also has a range similar to this that showcases some hugely important comics from the DC Comics range, including the debut appearances of Batman, Superman and Flash.

$2 NZD | 35.0g of 0.999 silver | 175 x 262 mm | B/UNC, colour | 10,000 | YES / YES |
STAR WARS A NEW HOPE NOTES
The 2018 debut set of six silver foils in the banknote format, these feature characters from the hit movie in full colour across a sheet of silver similar in size to a traditional banknote. Each foil is sealed in acrylic for protection, as they are only a fraction of a millimetre in thickness.
The six foils all fit into a great quality album that was supplied free with the first issue, in this case Luke Skywalker, and is not available any other way, either to purchase separately, or with other issues in the series. A mintage of 50,000 per foil and an issue price of $39.00 USD each, means these are much cheaper than the other options here.
DENOMINATION | COMPOSITION | DIMENSIONS | FINISH | MINTAGE | BOX / COA |
$1 NZD | 5.0g of 0.999 silver | 150 x 70 mm | B/UNC, colour | 50,000 | ALBUM / YES |
STAR WARS THE FORCE AWAKENS NOTES
The 2019, second set of six silver foils in the banknote format, they’re similar to the New Hope set in featuring characters from the hit film. Again, the album was only available with the first issue, in this case Rey, and is not available to purchase separately, or with other issues in the series. The same high mintage and relatively affordable price marks this out as one that should prove popular and easy to obtain for the less hardcore coin collector.

$1 NZD | 5.0g of 0.999 silver | 150 x 70 mm | B/UNC, colour | 50,000 | ALBUM / YES |
STAR WARS SEASON’S GREETINGS FOIL
Disney Season’s Greetings Christmas coins have been a regular fixture for the last few years, so the mint has decided to transfer the concept to the sci-fi franchise with a foil. Each comes packaged in a holder designed like a Christmas card. As one of the 5 gram foils, it’s eminently more affordable than the bigger premium format used for the movie posters, so there’s definitely appeal here for the gift market.

STAR WARS SEASON’S GREETINGS COINS
A nice change of paste with Christmas themed coins in some neat display packaging. Original in a sea of copies.

STAR WARS WORLDS: TATTOOINE FOIL
Star Wars Worlds, looks at some of the inventive planets that have become part of the Star Wars story over the many movies. The foils are styled to look like postcards and feature full colour images on one side. Packaged in gatefold cards, these are an inventive new addition, which turned out to be a view shared by very few, given this was the only issue.

Excellent list. Fills a need for sure.
I am not easily confused but NZ mint went from the ultra high relief to the dimensional ultra high relief helmets without me noticing it was a different series. Same weight… Same mintage. It wasn’t until the 3rd coin in the dimensional series I realized. They haven’t produced any of the original ultra high reliefs since… personally all the 2oz high relief will be classed a same series.
There are so many different series now that the differences between them are getting smaller and smaller. I just treat the original HR series as an enhanced ‘Classic’ range, while the helmets are distinct with their own style.
Have you seen the Galactic Empire bullion yet?
It’s a dealer exclusive and the description seems to indicate that it is part of a “Symbols of Star Wars Series” bullion sub-series along with the Mythosaur.
Yes, we covered it in early May ( https://agaunews.com/star-wars-galactic-empire-bullion-coin-2021-nz-mint/ ) We only update the guides every month or so. Looks like it will be an interesting series. We did put it in the other article though ( https://agaunews.com/portfolio-items/2017-2019-star-wars-bullion-by-new-zealand-mint/ )
Ah that makes sense. Wow what a fantastic resource this site has been. Thanks for sharing that last link, I hadn’t seen that the bullion series was broken out as it’s own article. Really such valuable guides and information here.
You are missing quite a few coins on this list, any idea when this site will be up to date?
I actually have this one, the Music Coins guide, and the Marvel Comics guides open on my computer for editing right now. They usually get updated every month or so.
Awesome website. I have been looking for where these are all listed in one place. One comment for Faces of the First Order you are showing the Snowtrooper coin from Faces of the Empire not the First Order Snowtrooper Coin.
Thanks, David. Fixed, along with a new update to several series, and new ones.
Could you post a link to the updated list please? I also don’t see any of the 2011 issues.
What? This is an almost completely up-to-date list spread over three pages. It’s constantly revised (check the Changelog at top). Also, the guide starts in 2016 (it’s in the title) to cover the NZM’s new Star Wars contract with Disney. We don’t consider the 2011 coins part of this program.
Thanks for the information. You are a good source. You should reconsider the the 2011 coins. They are the. Most valuable in the collection. It is my understanding from the NZM that they were produce for a whole seller who had the Disney rights.. The coins were produced at the NIue Mint. The Darth Vader Helmet and Millennium Falcon were his doing. I think there were 10 coins. They are the Father of this entire Star Wars series.
I actually had that set, the Millennium Falcon one I think. I might add a little bit to the end of the guide when I get time.
