Pobjoy expands its marine animals range with a silver Southern Right Whale coin

The latest of the British Pobjoy Mints range of marine animal coins is now available and again depicts a whale. Because many of the states and territories that Pobjoy issue for are small and remote islands, this particular subject matter is very well chosen and Pobjoy have had great success over the years with it. While this mint is quite unique in dabbling heavily with titanium coins, this issue sticks with sterling (0.925) silver, although a base-metal variant is also available.

Featuring the magnificent Southern Right Whale, an animal that thanks to the mints description I now know has the biggest balls in the world, the design is one of the typically clean pieces of art that Pobjoy are known for. The whale is depicted well, much like people would imagine, and the background is simple but well chosen. Just the denomination is inscribed here, everything else surrounding Pobjoy’s own effigy of QEII on the obverse. The coin comes in a solid box and each of the 2,000 minted will cost £41.63 + tax.

MINTS DESCRIPTION: The Pobjoy Whales & Dolphins set has always been a very desirable and successful set and we normally find that the coins are leaving the Mint at a speed of knots. This coin, featuring the Southern Right Whale, is no exception and we think it perfectly captures the majestic mammal. We are issuing this coin on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory as these whales inhabit the oceans surrounding the island. The issue limit for this coin will be 10,000 in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel and 2,000 in Proof Sterling Silver. The obverse features the Pobjoy exclusive effigy design of HM Queen Elizabeth II in exceptional detail.

The Southern Right Whale or Eubalaena Australis spends the summer in the far Southern Ocean in close proximity to Antarctica where it feeds. In winter the species does migrate north but some have been known to spend their winter in Sub-Antarctic regions. The total population of the species is estimated to be around 10,000 individuals. These whales grow to become very large in size and an adult female can measure up to 17m in length. They are distinguishable by a few key characteristics which are the callouses on its head, broad backs with no dorsal fins and long arching mouths. The male Southern Right Whale holds the world record for the largest testicles of any animal, each one weighing around 500kg!
