Perth Mint releases the proof versions of their legendary Lunar Series of gold and silver coins

After the reveal of the new 2018 bullion designs from the Perth Mint a couple of days ago it was only a matter of time before the inevitable avalanche of specials started to appear. First out of the starting gate after just 3 days are the proof versions of the star of the show, the Lunar series. As before, the coins are simply unaltered, but proof finish issues of the original designs.

The gold coin is for sale in three sizes, as in previous years. The 1 oz ($2,999.00), 1/4 oz ($799.00) and 1/10 oz ($339.00)format coins are available individually or as a three-coin set ($3,999.00). Each comes in a very good quality wooden box and a themed outer shipper. A serialised certificate of authenticity is included, of course. Depicting a Labrador Retriever standing on some rocks nicely framed by an arcing pine tree, it’s one of the better lunar designs in this series.

The silver coin depicts a pair of German Shepherds (adult and pup) and has a sparser ground to sit the subjects on. A Peony flower sits in the background but isn’t as well integrated into the design as the flora on the gold coin. An attractive piece nevertheless. Three sizes are available individually, each packaged in one of the Perth Mints signature red-lidded boxes. One kilo ($1,795.00), one-ounce ($99.00) and half-ounce ($65.00) sizes are up for grabs and there’s also a three-coin set that loses the kilo and adds a well-sized two-ounce coin instead. Selling for $350.00, it’s our favourite way to get this design, especially with the biggest coin in the set coming in at a healthy 55.60 mm in diameter. All are available today.
