North American Predators antiqued silver coin series concludes with the Grizzly Bear.

The last of the North American Predators coin series from US mega-dealer APMEX has finally debuted, rounding out an attractive trio, and featuring one of the world’s most powerful land carnivores, the Grizzly Bear. The first coin debuted last October and depicted the Grey Wolf, the second back in April having a more unusual subject to portray, the Sea Lion, one rarely seen on modern numismatics.

Thematically identical to previous coins, the head-only approach worked well previously and works very well here. Filling the canvas from top to bottom, the jaws open look is very dynamic and the perfect way to display the series unique feature – the tooth. Inset into the place where one of the primary canine teeth would sit is a ceramic representation of the fang. It’s in no way distracting or inappropriate for a change, blending nicely with the subject matter. Inscriptions ara a little more plentiful than we normally like, but the font is small and they’re placed relatively unobtrusively.

The obverse is of a simple traditional design, just the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscribed name, issuing state and denomination. Packaging is typical of a CIT produced, BH Mayer struck coin. The wooden box is of a good quality and holds the Certificate of Authenticity. A set of all three coins is also available and presented in a larger version of the same style of box. With only 25 sets available and a price lower than buying the three seperately at current prices ($459.99), it’s an obvious route for those yet to buy any of the coins. The individual coin is $169.99, a rise of $20 on the second coin, and $30 on the first. Available now exclusively from APMEX.

MINT DECSRIPTION: The explores Lewis and Clark names this bear grisley or “grizzly”, which could have meant “grizzled”, that is, golden and gray tips of the hair or “fear-inspiring”. Naturalist George Ord classified this bear in 1815, not for its hair, but for is character, “terrifying bear”. Grizzly bears have been known to prey on large mammals such as elk, deer, sheep and bison. Grizzly Bears in Canada and Alaska are larger than those in the American Rocky Mountains due to the richness of their diet.
