2013-DESOLATION-OF-SMAUG

Without a shadow of a doubt, Tolkein’s novel, The Hobbit, is one of the literary worlds most beloved works, possibly even more so than the epic Lord of the Rings Trilogy by the same author. Obviously the success of the Lord of the Rings movies is no secret to anybody, but instead of a single movie, the director Peter Jackson has decided to film the prequel novel over three seperate films. Initially unsure of this approach, the three Oscar and three BAFTA nominations, along with a box-office take in excess of a billion dollars has definitely made the decision to take it the correct one.

The next, middle installment of the trilogy is called ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ and hits movie theatres worldwide in December this year. In anticipation of the huge buzz the movie is going to generate amongst fans, the New Zealand Post, with the Royal Australian Mint, is releasing some quite ambitious gold and silver collectible coins.

First to hit is a NZ$10,000, gold set of three 10z coins portraying three of the main characters in the film: Bilbo Baggins, Azog and Thranduil. Thought to have been destroyed many years ago, Azog the Defiler has come forth once more, leading a lethal pack of killer-Orcs. Father to Legolas Greenleaf, Thranduil is a powerful Elf-Lord, and a legendary fighter. Finally, Bilbo Baggins is an unassuming Hobbit who is swept away from his home in the Shire to embark upon an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.Produced in .9999 gold, these coins are limited to a mintage of 250 sets worldwide. This premium gold coin set is packaged in a wooden case and each set is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. The mintage is super-low, the coins look good, and the packaging is spot on. This could be a sleeper hit for the well-heeled fan.

Secondly comes the set that’s probably going to get the most attention as it’s reasonably affordable and you get quite a bit for your money. This silver proof coin set features all of the thirteen Dwarves: Thorin Oakenshield, Dwalin, Balin, Fili, Kili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur across five premium coins. The set is contained within an intricately carved wooden case featuring ‘The Company of Thorin Oakenshield’ logo, which is also featured on a collectable pin enclosed inside the case and shown bottom-left in the image below.

The big draw with this set is the low mintage of just 1,000 sets. The New Zealand Mint’s recent Doctor Who set is rare enough at 3,000 sets, but this ones about as common as a dodo’s egg. We can imagine lots of fans being blown-away by the set as it’s an impressive enough gift set. It’s up for NZ$695.00.

Finally, we have a single 1oz gold coin and a single 10z gilded, silver coin. This 1oz gold proof coin is the premium single coin in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug collection. The eye-catching design features Smaug – a giant fire-breathing Dragon – flying above the Lonely Mountain. Made from 0.9999 gold and with a low worldwide mintage of 500, this limited edition coin is beautifully packaged within a wooden case with the official The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug logo intricately engraved into the lid. Inside the box you’ll find an individually numbered certificate and the coin costs NZ$3,395.00.

The silver coin features selective gold plating around the rim, where the words ‘Middle-earth – New Zealand’ are inscribed. The iconic depiction of Smaug and the Lonely Mountain are integral to the film and the individually numbered certificate adds to the collectability of this timeless coin. This will be the most popular coin and the mintage of 20,000 pieces certainly reflects that. We haven’t seen one in the flesh yet, but this could well be the best looking coin of the lot, and at NZ$149.00, the cheapest.
