Lunar week continues with the first of the New Zealand Mints annual releases, there will be two, and the design this time is a little outside of the norm. Depicting a beautifully engraved half portrait of a monkey against a proof background, it’s a much different approach than that taken by the competition to date, who for the most part have chosen to depict monkeys (or apes), in full pose, often in trees etc. The inscription along the left-hand border reminds us of all the attributes that the monkey is said to possess in Chinese mythology and overall it’s a very fine coin in our view, possessing a great level of detail.

Presented in the acrylic block frame that the mint has made its own, the clean-struck 1 oz silver coin is a fine gift for the lunar collector. Available to order now for $80.00 US.

MINTS DESCRIPTION

Those born in the Year of the Monkey are highly intelligent, have a positive sense of humour, and a magnetic personality which leads to them being prosperous individuals.

Always sociable, Monkeys are often seen ‘swinging’ from one group of friends to another, attracting a social following due to their charm and energy. Continually upbeat, they are often considered celebrities in their own circles thanks to their humour and sharp minds.

Romantically, those born during the Year of the Monkey make attractive and passionate lovers, due to their cheerfulness and wit. Monkeys are also great listeners and handle complicated situations or problems with ease, due to their natural intelligence and thirst for knowledge. This is emphasised in a career sense, where they can prosperously adapt to a variety of work environments. Skilled at problem solving, the Monkey is ambitious for success, which is usually granted due to their remarkable intelligence.
