Johan Cruyff, one of the worlds best footballers, is remembered on a new Dutch coin range

There aren’t many football players iconic enough to warrant a series of precious metal coins to be issued with their face on them, but easily making the shortlist would be Dutch legend, Johan Cruyff. One of the most talented and influential footballers of all time, Cruyff has the kudos to cross international boundaries and we don’t doubt that these Dutch coins will find plenty of buyers around the world.

The design by Hennie Bouwe is quite straightforward and well implemented. A portrait of the man, just like one you would find on a football collectors card, takes pride of place in the centre. His name and shirt number (the number 14 being the only number that Ajax have ever retired in a players honour), all done in a font that mimics that used by the sport, are placed either side. The denomination is also dropped in perfectly and doesn’t detract from the overall design in any way as a result. The obverse, like Commonwealth coins, carries an effigy of the ruling monarch, in this case King Willem-Alexander. The rim has the phrase ‘* GOD * ZIJ * MET * ONS’ (GOD BE WITH US) inscribed in it.

Several variants are available. Most numerous will be the half-ounce sterling silver with a mintage of 5,250. This is cleanly struck and unenhanced, exactly like the fifth-ounce 0.900 gold variant of which 1,000 will be produced. A three-variant set of the silver coin, packaged in a custom box, will likely be the highlight of the range. The design is the same as the clean coin except for different combinations of colour applied to the lettering. Each of these corresponds to one of the football clubs that Cruyff made his name at – Ajax Amsterdam, Barcelona, and the Dutch national squad. A clever idea and one that will resonate heavily with fans of this brilliant player.

The silver coin comes mounted to a gatefold card full of information about Cruyff and will sell for €49.95. Priced at €389.95, the gold coin is presented in a more traditional wooden box, as befits something that costs this much. Our favourite, the three coin set, is priced at €199.00 and is again presented in a wooden box, although much larger this time. For those that would just like a memento, a base metal coin mounted to a pretty neat credit-card is available for just €12.50 and has a mintage capped at 20,000 pieces. A fitting tribute to a legendary proponent of the world’s most popular sport. Available now.

2017 JOHAN CRUYFF GOLD COIN

Hendrik Johannes “Johan” Cruijff OON (25 April 1947 – 24 March 2016) was a Dutch professional football player and coach. As a player, he won the Ballon d’Or three times, in 1971, 1973, and 1974. Cruyff was the most famous exponent of the football philosophy known as Total Football explored by Rinus Michels, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history. In the 1970s, Dutch football rose from near obscurity to become a powerhouse in the sport. Cruyff led the Netherlands to the final of the 1974 FIFA World Cup and received the Golden Ball as player of the tournament. At the 1974 finals, he executed a feint that subsequently was named after him, the “Cruyff Turn”, a move widely replicated in the modern game.

At club level, Cruyff started his career at Ajax, where he won eight Eredivisie titles, three European Cups and one Intercontinental Cup. In 1973, he moved to Barcelona for a world record transfer fee, winning La Liga in his first season and was named European Footballer of the Year. After retiring from playing in 1984, Cruyff became highly successful as manager of Ajax and later Barcelona; he remained an influential advisor to both clubs. His son Jordi also played football professionally.

In 1999, Cruyff was voted European Player of the Century in an election held by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics, and came second behind Pelé in their World Player of the Century poll. He came third in a vote organised by the French magazine France Football consulting their former Ballon d’Or winners to elect their Football Player of the Century. He was chosen on the World Team of the 20th Century in 1998, the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2002, and in 2004 was named in the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players.

Considered to be one of the most influential figures in football history, Cruyff’s style of play and his football philosophy has influenced managers and players, including Frank Rijkaard, Pep Guardiola, Michael Laudrup, Arsène Wenger, Eric Cantona and Xavi. Ajax and Barcelona are among the clubs that have developed youth academies based on Cruyff’s coaching methods. His coaching philosophy helped lay the foundations for the revival of Ajax’s international successes in the 1990s. Spanish football’s successes at both club and international level during the years 2008 to 2012 have been cited by many as evidence of Cruyff’s impact on contemporary football. In 2017, Cruyff was named among the 10 greatest coaches since the foundation of UEFA in 1954.  (Source: Wikipedia)
