Classic Star Wars continues its run through the main characters with the translation droid C-3PO
Easily the best of the movie licence coins currently being produced in our opinion, Classic Star Wars features major characters from one of the mosst successful franchises in cinema history. Now on its ninth release, previous issues have been Darth Vader, Han Solo, Yoda, R2-D2, Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca. Now for the latest release we get R2-D2’s sidekick C-3PO.
Always partnered with his small friend, C-3PO is a protocol droid, intended to assist in etiquette, customs, and translation, and fluent in over six million languages. Designed by Anakin Skywalker, he became friends with the astromech droid R2-D2 and they quickly became the comic relief element of the movies. They remain the only characters to have appeared in all nine Star Wars movies released to date, inlcuding Rogue One, as well as the animated Clone Wars series.
The coin depicts C-3PO in a classic pose with R2-D2 in front. It could be a scene from one of a number of the movies as the two are so inextricably linked. As in the past, the reverse face is free of major inscription, just a small copyright and composition line near the coin rim. The obverse carries the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II required by being issued for Niue Island, a Commonwealth state.
The same two gold (1 oz and ¼ oz) and one silver (1 oz) are on offer again and mintages remain the same at 500, 1,000 and 10,000 respectively. Prices also remain unchanged at $2500, $620 and $85 USD. Another very well realised design, we remain convinced that if you want Star Wars coins, this is the series to get, far better than the ship series. There should be at least one more issue to come this year, one we think will be very popular, and the mint is also asking for views on what collectors would liek to see in 2018, so it’s a franchise with a lot of life left in it yet. C-3PO is the ninth character to feature in the Star Wars Classic coin collection. These stunning engraved 1 oz silver coins feature C-3PO with his unlikely counterpart R2-D2 in Star Wars: A New Hope. The C-3PO 1 oz Silver Coin comes presented in a high-quality Star Wars branded and stylized inner coin case and themed outer coin packaging. The Certificate of Authenticity sits within the coin case and there is a worldwide limited mintage of only 10,000 coins.
Fluent in over six million forms of communication, the golden protocol Droid C-3PO (See-Threepio) has become an essential companion of his master Luke Skywalker and to the Rebel Alliance. Since Luke’s own Uncle Owen purchased the droid from a band of Jawas on Tatooine, Threepio has accompanied Luke and the Rebellion throughout the galaxy in their fight for freedom. He is rarely seen without his squat counterpart R2-D2, and together, the two make a remarkably capable team. Because of Artoo’s limited communication abilities, Threepio must often interpret his companion’s electronic sounds for his human masters.
Though preferring to remain far from any potential threat, the anxious droid frequently finds himself in the midst of the action. It is Threepio who first learns of Imperial occupation on Cloud City, but the fretful Droid is disabled before he can warn his friends. Later, on the forest moon of Endor, Threepio helps convince the Ewoks to fight alongside the Rebellion in what will be the decisive victory over the Galactic Empire and the beginning of a new era of peace in the galaxy.
