Most of the world’s major mints release proof precious metal sets of their circulating currency and the Royal Australian Mint is no exception, doing so in gold and silver. All six of the coins from the five-cent piece up to the $2 are represented and we’re fortunate that it’s a pretty strong set of designs overall.

Designed by Stuart Devlin, all bar the $2 coin that features an Aborigine, depict some of Australia’s most famous wildlife. Some have appeared before, especially the $1 ‘Mob of Roos’ that we have here in a really beautiful high-relief silver form. First appearing as Australian currency back in 1966, next year sees the 50th anniversary of decimal coinage, so we’d expect something extra special in 2016.

The gold sells for $10,000 AUD (inc tax) and has a limited mintage of 100 units, hardly surprising at the price given it contains only two ounces of metal. The silver is $350.00 and is limited to 1,000 sets. Both seem very nicely packaged in quality wooden boxes and are available to order now with shipping from 04 May.

2015 PROOF SILVER CURRENCY SET

MINTS DESCRIPTION

On 14 February 1966, a new era in Australian currency began. The imperial system of pounds, shillings and pence was replaced by decimal currency. This represented Australia’s move in joining a worldwide money trend and an opportunity for the country’s new coin designs to reflect a truly Australian identity. These coins were designed by Stuart Devlin, showcasing a range of uniquely-Australian wildlife. While there have been some changes throughout the years, they have become enduring icons of Australian culture. They were joined in 1984 by the one dollar coin and in 1988 by the two dollar coin. The set comes in beautiful timber presentation case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

The Royal Australian Mint has produced these coins since their introduction and celebrated a number of significant themes and events on commemorative, proof coins that have captured the hearts and minds of many.
