AgAuNugget: Burkina Faso debuts Age of Dinosaurs fractional silver coin series

It isn’t often that we get to see new fractional silver coins with a brilliant uncirculated finish. Sometimes we’ll get fractional versions of the usual one-ounce design, but rarely one that is available primarily in a size as small as a quarter of an ounce. German coin producer MCI-Mint have long had an eclectic range of silver coin designs in their catalogue, lots of different, low mintage designs, so it’s no surprise that they would be the one to put out this new series.

Called The Age of the Dinosaurs, the series has launched with a pair of the more widely known of these titanic creatures. The first depicts the Allosaurus, the second the herbivorous Stegosaurus. Dinosaurs have long been popular on modern numismatics and the genre has been home to some fine designs indeed. These are relatively simple affairs, no doubt dictated by the finish and size, but we’re a little limited in opinion forming on these because of the quality of the images. MCI’s coins almost universally look far better than the images suggest, so we’ll try to get some images of these in Berlin in a couple of weeks time.

Supplied encapsulated with a Certificate of Authenticity, these Burkina Faso issued coins should be available shortly priced around €27.00. Similar to the Royal Canadian Mint’s Tyrannosaurus Rex coin in specification, that coins mintage positively dwarf’s these at 300,000 versus just 2,500.
